Overview

This guide will walk you through the process of upgrading your system from Windows 10 to Windows 11. Windows 11 brings a refreshed look and feel, as well as several performance and security improvements. Before proceeding with the upgrade, ensure that your device meets the minimum system requirements for Windows 11.

 

Prerequisites

  1. Back up all data. It is recommended that you use OneDrive. Instructions can be found on the OneDrive page.
  2. Ensure your computer can support Windows 11. The oldest NKU computers that can support Windows 11 are Dell Latitude 5590 laptop model with asset tags 18R or 18N and Dell Optiplex 7060 desktop model with asset tags 19R or 19N. If you are not sure if you computer will support Windows 11, please contact the IT Help Desk.
  3. Ensure your computer is running a version of Windows 10 OS that is capable of the upgrade. Follow these instructions to find your Windows 10 version . If the version includes "LTSC", your computer will need a full wipe and reimage to Windows 11.

 

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Run Windows Update
1. Click on the Start button and select Settings.
2. In Settings, select Update & Security.
3. In the left-hand menu, click on Windows Update.
4. Click on Check for Updates. You may have to select Check online for updates from Microsoft Update. If your device is eligible, you will see an option to upgrade to Windows 11.

Step 2: Download and Install Windows 11
1. If your device is eligible for the upgrade, click on Download and Install under the Windows 11 upgrade option.
2. Review and accept the license terms.
3. The download will begin. The process may take some time depending on your internet speed and hardware performance.

Step 3: Restart Your PC
1. Once the installation is complete, you’ll be prompted to restart your computer.
2. After the restart, your device will boot into Windows 11. The installation process will continue for a few minutes.
3. Follow any on-screen instructions to complete the upgrade.
