Webex Calling Frequently Asked Questions
For information on using Webex Calling once your department as transitioned, please see Webex Calling
Q: What is Webex Calling?
A: Webex Calling is the cloud-based/next-generation version of the Cisco calling platform NKU has historically used. Over the 2024-2025 school year, NKU Telco will be transitioning faculty and staff to this new phone system. NKU staff and faculty will be able to use computers and mobile devices to make and receive phones calls.
Q: Will the Webex Calling app work with my device?
A: Very likely! After your department has transitioned, you can get the app for Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Android.
-
For Webex App for Windows, you must have Windows 10 or later and Windows 64-bit
-
For Webex App for Mac, you must have macOS 10.15 or later. You can also choose from a Mac OS Intel or Mac OS Apple M1 chip installation for Webex App.
-
Mobile versions are also available in the Apple and Google Play stores.
-
There also appears to be support for Ubuntu and Red Hat, but it has not been tested yet.
Q: Will I still be able to have a desk phone?
A: Yes, physical phones will also remain an option if requested.
Q: Will my desk phone work with Webex Calling?
A: Some of our current desk phones are compatible with Webex Calling with modifications from NKU IT Telco. If your current desk phone looks one of the below phones, it can be converted for Webex Calling.
All compatible phones will need to be requested and converted for use with Webex Calling.
Q: Are we back to using Webex for meetings? I thought we had Microsoft Teams and Zoom
A: No, this is just for phone calling. We will continue to use Teams and Zoom for video conferencing purposes.
Q: Will I still be able to dial other NKU users using only their four digit extension?
A: Eventually, yes. During this transition phase, Webex DOES NOT support 4-digit dialing on outbound calls (this will be resolved once all NKU faculty/staff are switched over). Other NKU users will be able to dial in to you using a 4-digit extension, but you will need to dial other NKU extensions using the full 10-digit number.
Q: I don't want to use Webex Calling in Microsoft Teams. Do I have to?
A: No, there is a separate Webex app to make and receive calls that you can use instead. It integrates within Microsoft Teams if that function is desired.
Q: I work remotely and currently use Cisco Jabber. Is this the same?
A: Webex Calling replaces Jabber entirely once your department switches over and does not require you to connect to the NKU network via the VPN like Jabber does.
Q: I forgot the PIN number for my personal NKU extension. How do I get it reset?
A: For your personal line, you can actually reset your own PIN at user. webex.com. You can also manage all your greetings and voicemail settings here as well. For more information, please see Setting or Resetting your Voicemail PIN. If you are responsible for a department main line or a shared phone line, you will need to contact IT to reset that PIN.
