Unsolicited commercial email, also known as spam, has become an increasing problem at the University. All incoming email is scanned for spam-related content, and when suspect email is received, that email will be quarantined by the spam filter.
Every few days, you will receive an email from quarantine@messaging.microsoft.com that lists the messages recently blocked from your inbox.
Viewing Quarantined Emails
If you suspect an email may have been quarantined, you can log in to check your quarantine list. Go to the Webmail landing page, then click “Access Quarantine”. If you see an email that isn’t spam, can click the envelope icon to release the message to your inbox. Only release emails you know are legitimate.
Whitelisting/Blacklisting Email Senders
If you find yourself releasing emails from particular senders often, you can “whitelist” them, which allows them to pass by the spam filter. Log in to Webmail, then click the gear icon to access Settings. Select "Junk email". You can then add the email address or domain to the "Safe senders and domains" list.
You can use this same process to “blacklist" email senders as well. Simply add the email address or domain to the "Block" list.
Spoofing
If you see an email listed in your quarantine that appears to be sent from your email address, don’t panic. This is called “spoofing” and rarely means that your account has been compromised. It’s just a clever trick to get you to open a spam email.
Report Spam to IT
If you receive an email you suspect to be malicious, do not click any links or open any attachments. Instead, forward the email to abuse@nku.edu.
