Note: Please see warning note at the end of this guide for use of Hotspots with both Screencapture and Webcam in the same recording. Also note that currently Hotspots may not work on mobile devices.
Hotspots can be added to a Kaltura video by going to the Kaltura Video Editor located with your Kaltura My Media page,Click this Hotspot Video Link to see an example of them in use.
-
Once you have opened Kaltura Video Editor for your video click on the Hotspot Icon in your left hand Navigation
-
Navigate to the point in your timeline you would like the link to appear. Click the +Add Hotspot.
-
Next, click anywhere in your video you would like to add the link and add the Display text in the Text Field. If you don’t like the exact location or size of the container box you can adjust those manually by clicking and dragging the box to the desired location or clicking the transform pips to adjust the size of the box. By default the text is white and the background is black, we will go into how to change this later in Advanced Settings.
-
In the Link to field you can add the URL to a webpage you would like the Hotspot to navigate too.
-
Instead of using a URL you can add a skip in your video to jump to different parts. This can be very handy to your students should you have a lengthier video and you want to help them navigate to different points quickly. To do this click the Time in this video button and select the time you would like to skip too.
-
Clicking the Advanced Settings button you can access tools to change the font color, shift from normal/bold/italic, adjust the text size.
For the container box the text resides in you can change the roundness of the box edges, change the background color
You can also shift the position on the box to a specific point on the X and Y access as well as adjust the overall size.
-
Scrolling down a bit further you can also adjust the time the link is on the screen. The is helpful to prevent the link for remaining the entire duration when you only want it on the screen for a few seconds. Be mindful of how short a link is as you will want to usually have it on the screen for at least 3-5 seconds to give the viewer time to click.
-
As you create more Hotspots you can view them on the timeline at the bottom and adjust their duration manually by click on the Hotpost and dragging the edge to the desired start or endpoint. It is best to not leave too many links on the screen at a time as to not overwhelm the viewer.
-
You can also edit the details of any Hotspot in the left hand side of the video editor by clicking the 3 dots in the upper right of the desired link and clicking Edit
-
Once complete remember to hit Save in the upper right corner. It shouldn’t take long for the Hotspots to appear in your video
Warning Note: When having a recording that uses both Webcam and Screencapture be aware the links remain in the same location even when the video feed is manipulated by the user. Because of this Hotspots are most effective when using only one recording type. Below is an example of the same link appearing with the three available views.
