Minimum Computer Configurations

Northern Kentucky University recommends the following minimum configurations for students, faculty or staff who are purchasing or bringing computers to campus.

A student's program requirements, budget, and preference should be the primary factors in choosing a computing device.  A student should also consider the major he or she will be pursuing, as some areas of study may have more stringent requirements than the recommendations listed below.

Chromebooks are not recommended; they will not work with many software products required for classes and exams.

Apple

This is the recommended minimum configuration for most general studies courses.  However, check with your college for major-specific requirements.

NKU IT requires that AppleCare+ be purchased with every new Apple Computer.

Every Mac comes with a one-year limited warranty and up to 90 days of complimentary technical support. AppleCare+ for Mac extends your coverage to three years from your AppleCare+ purchase date and adds up to two incidents of accidental damage coverage, each subject to a service fee of $99 for screen damage or external enclosure damage, or $299 for other damage, plus applicable tax. In addition, you’ll get 24/7 priority access to Apple experts via chat or phone.
