Email Lists or Listservs

About Distribution Lists

A distribution list, or a listserv, is a mailing list that allows NKU faculty and staff to send mass email to users both internal and external to the university. These lists facilitate the distribution of email postings to a specified list of users known as members, or subscribers.

When sending email to large numbers of people, distribution lists are necessary due to a limit on the number of recipients a user can send to from a standard email account. If you need to send emails to over 100 or more users on a regular basis, it is strongly recommended that you request a distribution list.

All distribution lists have an email address that ends with @mymailnku.onmicrosoft.com. An NKU listserv example is nku-wellness@mymailnku.onmicrosoft.com.

Distribution List Requests

Distribution lists can be requested by faculty and staff for research and university-related purposes. Students are also permitted to own distribution lists, but they must be requested from either a faculty/staff advisor or the Student Life Office.

A service request can be submitted for the following:

  • Creating a new distribution list
  • Changing list owner(s)
  • Editing message approval settings
    • Ex: allowing list members to send messages without owners’ approval
  • Editing member approval settings
    • This enables or disables member ability to subscribe and unsubscribe without owner approval
  • Making lists visible on the global address list
    • This is necessary to allow owners to manage the list's members
